The Excelsior Grand is situated just outside the old city walls of Valletta and we got ourselves almost there before getting a bit lost but a helpful police woman helped us out and we found the place.
It's built on the side of a hill and the entrance is via a sweeping driveway.
Driving in front of the plush 5* star hotel in our tatty grey Chevvy Spark was amusing, we parked right outside intending to just leave our suitcase as we were early for check-in, but in fact our room was ready and the concierge happily took the car away to park it.
The hotel lobby is actually on the 6th floor (we were 9th floor looking out over the steps) and the lower floors have sea view rooms.
The hotel has its own marina.
